basic info

Name: Vayne Carudas Solidor
Age: 27
Canon: Final Fantasy XII
History: Vayne Carudas Solidor on the Final Fantasy Wiki. In brief:

Vayne Solidor is the third and eldest surviving son of Emperor Gramis of the Archadian Empire in the realm of Ivalice, Commandant of the Western Armada, and the recently appointed imperial Consul of Rabanastre. At 27, he is an accomplished statesman and military strategist who is the one truly responsible for Archadia’s conquests of three kingdoms in its march upon its rival superpower on the global stage, the western empire of Rozarria. But Vayne’s true goals do not end with the defeat of Rozarria. Having discovered that the entire history of Ivalice has been manipulated and dictated by a conspiracy of shadowy “gods” known as Occuria, Vayne is determined to wrest control of mankind’s destiny from Occurian machinations by overthrowing those they favor, stealing the secret power they have used to shape the world, and uniting the kingdoms of Ivalice into a single great empire, forever putting the reins of history back in the hands of mortals…or at least his hands, as absolute ruler of Ivalice.

If Vayne is accepted into Enervation, he will be arriving to Sheatris shortly after assuming his station as Consul of Rabanastre in the beginning of the game.

personality

Strengths:
• Vayne is a man with complete confidence in himself and his abilities. His collected, clement demeanor and decisive mindset are at least good for morale, even if his applications of them will not sit lightly upon the consciences of his allies and associates.

• He is extremely well-mannered and courteous, and is at least modest enough to ask his subjects to treat him as their equal. Indeed, his sense of diplomacy and empathy for the commonborn is surprisingly genuine. Vayne may be a member of the social elite, but he considers himself a public official, not royalty.

• He is not incapable of caring about other people or wishing to protect them. He loves his younger brother, fiercely, and there is at least one other friend in his life whom he respects and admires tremendously (perhaps as a surrogate father, considering his own strained relationship with Emperor Gramis). It’s not unthinkable that he may come to regard someone on Sheatris similarly.

• The ends Vayne cares about are at least positive goods: the efficient suppression of disorder and the efficient administration of governance. He has a desire to see life ultimately become better for everyone…as long as they do not oppose him.

Flaws: Oh, goodness.
• Vayne is obsessively ambitious, and there is no controlling or checking that ambition. He may be a reliable ally, but he is always thinking about his own goals first. Those of others will always come second.

• The confidence mentioned as one of his strengths can quickly turn to hubris. No matter how eloquently he sues for peace, Vayne is still a killer, a conqueror, and a political saboteur who believes he, a man of 27, is qualified to rule the world. That pride and inflamed sense of self-worth can blind him to his own limitations.

• Most seriously, Vayne applies absolutely no ethical calculus to his actions as a head of state. None. His worldview allows him to rationalize any degree of ruthlessness in the pursuit of the peace he ultimately envisions. And he is neither insane nor delusional in this justification: he is perfectly aware of just how much suffering and death he is enacting. Whether he’s evil or not is open for interpretation, but he is self-consciously amoral, and though that is better than being evil (for it includes the possibility that Vayne could do much good for Sheatris, and intend to do acts that he recognizes are good), it is still a very alarming quality because his enemies - and his allies - are going to find that questions of rightness and wrongness will not enter into his calculations. He not only has no scruples over his means, he regards scruples as irrelevant.

Miscellaneous:
• Despite his glacial composure and sordid past, Vayne isn’t necessarily unpleasant company. He can appreciate humor and small talk, will strive to make a table neighbor or potential interlocutor feel included in conversation, and has the modesty and good sense to ask for their story before he even begins to hint at his. He could conceivably come to regard someone as a friend, particularly if they remind him of his associate Dr. Cid or his younger brother Larsa.

• Vayne has a cultivated appreciation for history and great feats of art, architecture, and the like. Sheatris will undoubtedly pique his interest with its grand vistas and ruins.

• For obvious reasons, he dislikes recklessness, recalcitrance, and weakness. Order is imperative.

• Vayne does care about his health and physical conditioning. It shows! And he’ll likely prove interested in exercising or sparring with his allies and associates during his stay. It’s a fine way of discerning their own abilities (and limits).

game plans

Starting Faction: Vayne will fight on the side of Empress Felana of Zakiem against the forces of Warlord Euramar and Wulgrimm.

Goals: A Final Fantasy villain starting out on the Light Faction is kinda funny, isn’t it? Felana likely recruited Vayne for his outstanding talent as a military strategist, and with the understanding (or hope) that Ivalice, not Sheatris, is the realm he’s truly interested in ruling. And Vayne will prove amenable enough…but in time, he may develop other designs. The magic required to summon him and the others here had a source and technique, after all. If he can learn the secrets of Sheatris and forge just the right alliances, the limits to what he could accomplish on Ivalice now look far more breakable. Even the more carnal aspects of mana on Sheatris have a certain utility to them (it may be sex, but it’s still power, and Vayne considers all power a potential asset). Whether he stays on Felana’s side, switches sides to Euramar, or plays both sides against each other from inside either camp, I think he can add some serious (and fun) political intrigue to the Mana Wars.
